Kotodama or kototama, literally “word spirit”, is the Japanese name for the subtle power of language sounds and words. It is a central concept in Japanese mythology and Shinto, as well as in Japanese traditional martial arts. Indeed, one of the classical names of Japan is kototama no sakiwau kuni: “the land where the kototama (i.e. the mysterious workings of language) bring bliss.”
